Malt-O-Meal cereals recalled in Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz County health officials announced today that popular breakfast cereal manufacturer Malt-O-Meal is recalling some of its Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat cereals because of possible salmonella contamination.

According to the Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency, packages of the two cereals with "Best If Used By" dates between April 8, 2008, and March 19, 2009, are being recalled. In addition to the Malt-O-Meal brand, the cereals were also sold under various other private label brands including Acme, America’s Choice, Food Club, Giant, Hannaford, Jewel, Laura Lynn, Pathmark, Shaw’s, ShopRite, Tops and Weis Quality. A full list of recalled products can be found at http://www.malt-o-meal.com/recallinfo.

Consumers who have purchased one of the cereal packages affected by the recall should not consume any of it and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Malt-O-Meal has set up a toll free phone line for consumer questions at (877) 665-9331

The recall was initiated after Malt-O-Meal detected the presence of Salmonella in some of its products produced March 24. To date no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled cereals, according to the Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency.
