… this one looked like it was going to be all Miami Trace as the Panthers ran out to a 15-1 lead as 5 of the 6 Panthers that entered the game dented the napkin stat sheet putting points on the board … 6-7 jr big man in the post Adam Guthrie had a putback bucket & 2/2 from the line 4pts … 6-4 sr. Skye Salyers added a trey from the right corner 3pts … his running mate at the forward position 6-4 Trey Robinette scoring in the paint 2pts but missed on the “and 1” FT .. off of the Panther bench 6-2 jr. Cade Whitaker scored on a pair of shots from down on the blocks 4pts … through the first 6 minutes and change of the first period the Lions of Fairfield were held in check trailing 15-1 … the lone points coming on soph Caleb Berrera’s 1/2 from the free throw line … 6-1 soph Griffin Friend took the lid off the basket at the Lion’s end of the floor draining a 3 ball from behind the arc … 6-4 sr. Logan McIntosh added a drive to the rim for 2pts … Miami Trace 15 Fairfield Leesburg 6 after 1 … the Lions closed out the 1st quarter with a 6-0 run , then opened the 2nd with back to back to back threes as soph Brody Smith drained a trey on the first shot of the quarter … Griffin Friend followed suit knocking down a deep triple to pull Fairfield to within 3 pts at 12-15 … 6-4 sr Logan McIntosh got open at the top of the key for trey #3 in the qtr for the Lions … tying the score at 15-15 … coming out the Panther timeout … Julian Baker for MT was fouled in the paint 1/2 from the line … when the opposition has gotten back in the game by burning the nets from downtown, it’s nice to have an equalizer, a player who when he is “on fire” is shooting the ball from 3 ft away - the odds of scoring go way up from that distance … 6-7 Adam Guthrie is a man in the paint … the Panther big … got the ball down low, scored at the rim plus the “and one” 3pts, on successive MT misses Guthrie grabbed the boards and had stickbacks for 4pts … the final points for Miami Trace had the ball come into the low post & Guthrie finished at the rim 2 pts / 9pts in the quarter/13 in the half … Fairfield matched the shots of Guthrie down low as Friend added a drive baseline 2pts … Smith & Logan McIntosh each added a midrange jumper 2pts each … McIntosh finished the Lions scoring with 2/2 from the FT line … Miami Trace 25 Fairfield Leesburg 23 at the half … through 2 qtrs Miami Trace was 1 for 6 from behind the arc … noting that one of the best 3 point scorers in the SE district Trey Robinette was held to 2 pts and scoreless from three point land … for Fairfield the Lions were 4/7 from three however only getting 2 fgs in the paint with the 6-7 Guthrie stopping FHS penetration into the paint … Trace was living in the paint as the Panthers had 9 of 10 fgs on shots at the rim … tougher to keep knocking down 3’s than it is to keep making shots at the rim … advantage Miami Trace … Fairfield opened the 3rd with Griffin Friend hitting a midrange jumper 2pts … Brody Smith hit a trey 3pts … Quentin McIntosh the 6-4 jr. went to the line for 2 FTs making good on one … for MT, if it works don’t change it - Guthrie continued to get his shot at the rim to open the Trace scoring 2pts … Baker was fouled in the paint 1/2 at the line, Guthrie took the ball in the high post, showed his agility by dribbling down the right side of the lane finishing with a shot at the rim 2pts … 5-10 soph Caleb Rice for FHS took a Miami Trace turnover to the house for 2pts … Fairfield with the lead 31-30 with 5 mins and change on the clock in the 3rd … so far through 2 1/2 qtrs the Lions of Coach Williams had taken care of the ball showing only 3 turnovers on the napkin stat sheet while turning MT over 7 times … the strip, steal & score giving the Lions the 1 point advantage … for the last 5 minutes of the 3rd defense was the name of the game as each team scored 5 points to close out the period … for Miami Trace Cade Whitaker knocked down a corner three 3pts and Baker took a rare FHS turnover coast to coast for 2pts … Fairfield got something even rarer than a turnover - a bucket in the paint - this one by jr Quentin McIntosh 2pts … which was followed by Brody Smith’s 2nd trey of the quarter … Fairfield Leesburg 36 Miami Trace 35 after 3 … Miami Trace has good size beyond the 6-7, lineman build, Guthrie … the swing forwards of Robinette 6-4/ Salyers 6-4 both seniors … Whitaker 6-2/Baker 6-3 both strong football builds … Bowers checks in at 6-1 on the perimeter … by the end of 3 quarter the Lions for Fairfield had been battling the “bigs” in the paint for MT … as the 4th quarter progressed the wear and tear looked to take its’ toll on the Lions as shots were coming up short, shot selection wasn’t what it had been through 3 qtrs and decision making wasn’t as sharp as the Lions turned the ball over 4 times and probably most important the Lions were now controlling the boards at both ends of the floor … FHS was held scoreless the first 3 minutes of the 4th qtr as the Panthers got points in the paint from Whitaker 2pts down low … Guthrie added another drive to the rim 2pts following it up with an offensive rebound and putback 2pts … Miami Trace 41-36 with 4:55 on the clock … Friend for Fairfield scored with a shot in the paint over the 6-7 Guthrie 2pts and went 1/2 from the FT line … at 2:30 to play MT controlled the paint, the boards and was up 46-39 … the final points for Fairfield came on a transition bucket by Caleb Barrera 2pts and Smith 1/2 from the line … for Miami Trace Guthrie had 6pt all in the paint in the 4th /23 for the game … Skye Salyers a three ball and transition bucket 5pts … Cade Whitaker scored 2 more buckets on the blocks 4pts/11 points for the game off the MT bench … Bowers added 2/2 from the line … the Lions kept the slate clean picking up W number 17 on the season … Miami Trace 52 Fairfield Leesburg 42 a final …
